I love the contrast between tart apples and sweet chocolate and caramel. The soft caramel and crisp apple pair up wonderfully in this recipe, while the combination of tart and sweet flavors is also amazing.

As I child I loved caramel apples and (guilty secret) I still do. There’s something magical about those flavors. This recipe is like an adult version of my childhood favorite. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Sweet potato cobbler and these pumpkin mini cheesecakes are two other recipes that incorporate my favorite fall-time flavors.

Main Ingredients

The ingredients to make caramel apple slices spread out on a table.

With only 4 ingredients (plus water) in the recipe, everything can be considered a "main" ingredient. Let’s see what you’re going to need for these tart-sweet treats:

  • Apples: The star ingredient. I like to use Granny Smith apples because they’re tart and crisp. Other ideas include Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, and Fuji. You could even use a soft, sweet apple if you aren’t keen on tart flavors.
  • Caramel bits: These melt with a little water to make a sauce which will set and stick to the sliced apples. You can use any brand. If you can’t find bits you can chop up larger caramels instead.
  • Chocolate chips: For sweetness and decoration. Take your pick of milk chocolate or white chocolate. For added indulgence, use some of each! You could dip the apple slices in one color of chocolate and then drizzle the other kind over them once you’ve added the caramel layer. Get creative and have fun!
  • Vegetable oil: To melt with the chocolate chips. A little oil helps make the chocolate super-smooth so it drizzles over the sliced apples evenly.

Instructions Overview

How do you make caramel apple slices? First of all, wash and slice the apples then arrange the slices on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.

Next, melt the caramel with a little water and spoon some of this mixture over each apple slice. Once it has set, melt the chocolate chips with a little oil and then drizzle it over the apples.

Once the chocolate drizzle has set, you can peel the apple slices off the parchment paper and serve! Last time I made these I added chocolate sprinkles instead of chocolate drizzle. After pressing on them a little they stuck just fine!

Common Questions

Can I use Gala apples for caramel apples?

You can use any kind of apple you want in this recipe, but because the chocolate and caramel are both sweet, I find a tart apple to be best since you get that sweet-tart contrast.

How do you keep caramel on apples?

I find that it sticks quite well already, but if yours doesn’t seem to, just pop the tray of apple slices into the refrigerator as soon as you’ve spooned over the caramel so that it sets extra firm and stays on.

How can you keep sliced apples from turning brown?

The easiest way to stop this from happening is to spritz the sliced apples with lemon juice. Orange juice, lemonade, or anything else that’s acidic should also work. Vinegar works too, but that isn’t a flavor you’d want to add to this recipe! Whatever you use, pat the apples dry before adding the caramel so it sticks.

Why do my caramel apples have bubbles?

This can happen if you stir the mixture too fast or spoon it over the apple slices too quickly. Take your time with this recipe and it should come out bubble-free.

Do chocolate caramel apples need to be refrigerated?

They should be fine left out overnight, but I like to refrigerate them so they don't start to melt.

Chopnotch Tips

  • Cut apples can turn brown when exposed to the air. If you’re making these caramel apple slices ahead you can soak the sliced apples in lemon or lime juice.
  • The shiny wax on apples might make them look pretty, but sometimes the caramel can slip off. You might like to wash the wax coating off before you begin if that might be an issue. Hot water with a few drops of lemon juice or baking soda added should get it off easily.
  • I know I said this already, but make sure the sliced apples are dry before adding the caramel, or else it won’t stick!
  • These are wonderful for anything from a Halloween buffet table to a Thanksgiving snack. They’re so simple to make you will definitely want to make these more than once!
