The great thing about using a boxed brownie mix as the base is that you can add in whatever you like. So if you love brownies and also love Oreos, it’s a no-brainer. You'd probably love this Oreo cheesecake or these cookies and cream bars too!

I recommend you cut the Oreo brownies into small squares because they’re really rich. Don’t worry, you can always have a second one. I usually do! Served alone or with whipped cream or ice cream, this makes a great dessert after any kind of meal or even an indulgent snack. They’re portable enough for box lunches, picnics, or gatherings too.

Main Ingredients

The ingredients used to make Oreo brownies spread out on a table.

Using a boxed brownie mix makes short work of these Oreo brownies. Use the baking time to prepare the toppings and you’ll find you can make this recipe from start to finish in a little over half an hour. These are the main ingredients you’ll need:

  • Boxed brownie mix: The basis of the brownies. Any brand will work. Of course, if you have a favorite brownie recipe of your own, you could always use that instead.
  • Oreos: For crunch and flavor. Chopped Oreos are used in the brownie batter, in the cream layer, and also as a decoration on top. Is there such thing as too many Oreos? I don’t think so! Not a fan of Oreos? Substitute in any other kind of cookie you want.
  • Cream cheese: To make the topping. Make sure it’s at room temperature for smoother mixing with the Cool Whip. The tangy, creamy layer contrasts nicely with the rich Oreo brownies.
  • Cool Whip: Also for the topping. Cool Whip is a handy shortcut, but if you want to make your own whipped cream and use that, that’s fine too. You can make it ahead, just keep it chilled until use.
  • Semisweet chocolate chips: For added richness. Go ahead and substitute dark chocolate chips or even white chocolate chips if that’s your preference.

Instructions Overview

The first thing to do is prepare the Oreo stuffed brownies batter, folding in about a third of the chopped Oreos. Follow the instructions on the brownie packaging since brands differ. Bake the Oreo brownies then let them cool.

Beat the confectioners’ sugar into the cream cheese then fold in the Cool Whip and more of the Oreos. Spread this over the Oreo brownies.

Put the chocolate chips in a bowl with the oil and microwave until the chocolate has melted. Spread this over the cream cheese layer then sprinkle the remaining Oreos on top. Chill for half an hour before slicing and serving.

Common Questions

Is boxed brownie mix good?

This depends on the brand you choose as well as the add-ins you opt for. I find Betty Crocker’s Dark Chocolate Brownie Mix to be really good. Whether you add chopped cookies, nuts, chocolate chips, coffee, or any other flavorings, you can tailor a boxed brownie mix to your taste perfectly.

Why did my brownies come out chewy?

This isn’t the result we want! Under-baking Oreo brownies can make them gooey while over-baking can dry them out. The best way to gauge when they’re ready is to shake the pan a few minutes before the end of the suggested cooking time (see the packaging because each brand is different). If the brownies jiggle in the middle very slightly they are done. If not, give them a few more minutes and repeat until they are just set but a tiny bit jiggly still.

How do you store brownies after cooking?

Keep them in an airtight container on the countertop. They are best if eaten during a day or so of baking, but will keep for up to 5 days. If you won’t eat them within 5 days, then I’d suggest keeping them refrigerated or even freezing them in portions.

Chopnotch Tips

  • You can use literally any cookie you want in place of the Oreos. Feel free to experiment with a different one (or two!) kinds.
  • The perfect balance of ingredients is what gets the brownies crackled on top and fudgy on the inside, so measure your ingredients with a digital scale rather than using cup measurements if you can, for accuracy.
  • Swap the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or dried fruit if you like.
