Oreo Cupcakes

Rich chocolate cupcakes are topped with vanilla buttercream frosting.

For the cupcakes:

  • 14.3 ounces Oreos 1 package, divided
  • 1 box chocolate cake mix plus ingredients listed on the box

For the frosting:

  • ½ cup butter room temperature
  • 8 ounces cream cheese room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 ¾ cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 8 ounces mini Oreos 1 package, for topping


To make the cupcakes:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two muffin tins with paper liners. Place one regular-sized Oreo cookie flat in the bottom of each liner. Take half of the remaining Oreos, chop them coarsely, and set them aside.
  • Mix the boxed chocolate cake mix according to the instructions listed on the box. Mix the chopped Oreos into the cake mix. Transfer the batter into the cupcake tins filling each liner no more than ¾ full.
  • Bake for 15 minutes or according to the instructions listed on the box. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.

To make the frosting:

  • Meanwhile, take the remaining half of the regular-sized Oreos and pulse them in a food processor until you have fine crumbs.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, cream cheese, and vanilla extract. Then blend in the confectioners’ sugar a little at a time until well combined.
  • Mix the Oreo crumbs into the frosting. Transfer the frosting into a piping bag and pipe it onto the cooled cupcakes. Top each cupcake with a mini Oreo and then serve and enjoy!


  • You can use any kind of cookies to make these cupcakes, although Oreos are especially close to my heart! Feel free to experiment if you want.
  • Don't forget to shop for the ingredients listed on the back of the chocolate cake mix box as well.
  • There's no such thing as too many Oreos, so you might like to sprinkle some cookie crumbs over the frosting as well as the mini Oreo garnish.
