Main Ingredients

The ingredients to make strawberry banana milkshakes laid out on a table.

Milkshakes don’t typically need a lot of different ingredients. This strawberry banana milkshake is a delicious combination of fresh fruit, milk and more, for the perfect flavor and consistency. These are the ingredients you will need:

  • Strawberries: Use frozen strawberries so you don’t have to add ice. I like to keep a box in the freezer all the time so I can whip up a tasty smoothie whenever I want.
  • Bananas: Ripe bananas add nutrients and fruity flavor. Bananas have a natural affinity with strawberries. They are also rich in potassium and help you stay full for longer. If your bananas are a little black and need to be used up, this is the perfect recipe to use them in.
  • Milk: Well, it wouldn’t be a milkshake without the milk! Use any kind you want here. Whole, 2%, oat, rice, soy, or almond milk are all possibilities, so just use your preference.
  • Vanilla ice cream: For adding richness to the milkshake. Vanilla ice cream elevates this smoothie into a milkshake, adding an indulgent, creamy flavor and texture. Feel free to use strawberry ice cream instead or another flavor.

Instructions Overview

If you have made milkshakes before, the easy process will be familiar to you. If you usually buy your icy beverages in a restaurant, you’ll be delighted to know they’re quick and simple to prepare. First, you need to peel the bananas and then put them in the blender with the strawberries.

Next, pour in the milk and add the ice cream. Blend until the milkshake is completely smooth, then pour it into milkshake glasses. Top with whipped cream, fresh fruit slices, syrup, or anything else you like. Now just serve and enjoy!

Common Questions

How do you make a thick milkshake?

Do you like extra-thick milkshakes? I do! To thicken it up simply add more ice cream to the mix. The thicker it is the wider the straw you'll need to serve it with. It's difficult to suck a thick-shake up through a thin straw! If you add extra ice cream you might also like to add extra fruit to balance the flavors out.

How long do you blend a milkshake?

A good blender won't need more than a minute or so to blend your strawberry banana milkshake and make it smooth. How well (or otherwise) your blender can crush, chop and puree everything together determines how long it will take to fully blend your milkshake.

What is the ratio of ice cream to milk in a milkshake?

Most milkshake recipes call for between ¼ cup and ¾ cup milk for every 1½ cups ice cream. You can make your own decision though based on how thick or thin you want the milkshake to be. I'd recommend following the recipe then, if you want it thicker, just add another scoop of ice cream and blend again.

How do you thicken a milkshake without ice cream?

If you don't want to use ice cream or you're craving a milkshake and don't have any ice cream in the freezer, you can still make a thick milkshake which tastes good. One method is to use a lot of ice cubes in addition to the milk, sugar and fruit. Once the ice is crushed it will naturally thicken the milkshake although it won't really be creamy in texture.

Another option is to use heavy cream or Half & Half in there. This will still result in a comparatively thin milkshake, at least compared to an ice cream-based one, but at least you'll still get that creamy flavor.

Some people even use egg yolks which work as a great thickener, either raw or cooked (heated until 160°F). Make sure you cool the egg yolks completely in an ice bath before use – you don't want scrambled egg in your shake!!

Can I make this milkshake ahead?

You can make it ahead and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 72 hours. You will need to blend it again before serving if the ingredients separate.

How should I store the milkshakes?

If you aren’t serving it immediately, keep it refrigerated.

Can I freeze it?

Actually, it freezes really well. You can keep it in the freezer for up to 6 weeks. Any longer and ice crystals will begin to form. When you’re ready to drink it, just let it sit on the countertop until thawed.

What should I serve with a strawberry banana milkshake?

Since this can be a drink or dessert (or maybe a mixture of both!) you can serve it just as it is. If you’re hungry, pair it with your favorite cookie or cake.

Can I use fresh strawberries?

Frozen strawberries are handy because they cool down the milkshake without having to use ice. If you want to use fresh ones, just add a few ice cubes to the mix if you want (remember the ice cream also cools it down).

Chopnotch Tips

  • Not every blender can handle frozen ingredients, nuts or ice cubes so make sure yours is up to the job before making this.
  • Turn your shake into a malt by adding a couple of tablespoons of malt powder to the mixture.
  • Add more mix-ins like other kinds of fruit, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, cookie dough, Oreos, or anything else to make it unique.
  • You don’t have to serve this in a tall glass. Any large glass will work just fine.
